IIT BHUBANESWAR READY TO DEVELOP SOFTWARE TO CHECK SPEEDING, ODISHA

BHUBANESWAR: IIT Bhubaneswar has evinced keen interest in developing a software that can help the government to detect over speeding vehicles. The state transport department has decided to ask the school of electrical sciences of IIT Bhubaneswar to make a presentation of the project. "We have received a proposal for such a software from the school. The approximate cost of the project is Rs16.10 lakh. The school proposes to develop the radar technology for detecting such vehicles under all weather conditions," State Transport Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda said. The transport department said the details of the software could be known after the presentation.

Violation of speed limit has been causing road accidents in the state. Statistics of the state transport department said of the total 5,333 accident deaths in the state in 2019, nearly 69% died due to over speeding of vehicles. Under Section 183 of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, light and heavy vehicles to be fined Rs2,000 and Rs4,000, respectively, for driving in excess speed.

In a related development, the transport department has decided to set up two road safety sensitization centres- one at Chandrasekharpur DL testing ground and the other at Rourkela- to improve traffic compliance. Funds for the equipment and furniture will be provided by the transport department. Traffic awareness vans will be engaged in Sundargard, Ganjam, Keonjhar, Koraput and Balasore districts.
